This has to be my favorite Milky Way shot I have taken to date. I set up in the pitch black night on the rocky coast of Acadia National Park and shot out over the ocean catching our home galaxy. People always ask if it actually looked like that. And unfortunately the answer is no. I could clearly see the river of stars and nebulae, but it was not this distinct. Cameras work differently than our eyes do. Our eyes capture real time data, this image was taken with a 25 second exposure allowing the light to gather on the sensor. So is it real? Absolutely, this is what we would see if our eyes could collect light like a camera.
