Bridge Of Stars

Open Edition

Sitting on the Hooper’s Island Causeway alone in the middle of the night was a surreal experience. The wind was blowing up the waves which were breaking on the rocks on the side of the road. This quiet chain of islands is a big draw for local photographers but tonight I appeared to have it all to myself. I stopped in the middle of the road and got my tripod out. Every now and then I could feel the spray from the waves hit me. As my camera captured what appeared to the naked eye as a cloud stretching up from the horizon, the full glory of the Milky Way was revealed in my long exposure. I love the way the the arc of the Milky Way mimics the arc of the bridge. Even in this pitch black my camera was able to pick up the distant lights of small towns on the horizon. There are very few dark spaces left here in the Mid-Atlantic and this is one of my favorites.
